Fedora 13 Features Preview

Goddard is the codename for the latest version of the bleeding edge Linux distribution, Fedora 13. Eve before the release of Fedora 12 there were new feature plans for Fedora 13. New features continue to be added to the feature plans of Fedora 13 scheduled for a planned release on May 11, 2010. The Fedora 13 feature list includes a number of features that didn't make it in time for Fedora 12. The feature list includes NFSv4 protocol by default, support for mounting NFS servers over IPv6, and yum language package plug-in. It's almost time for Fedora 13 feature freeze and we hardly expect any new last minute additions. With most accepted Fedora 13 features highlighted on Fedora Project Wiki we decided to provide a comprehensive preview of the Linux distribution.

We would be discussing on the key features in Fedora 13 that have been accepted.

Btrfs system rollback support

Since November last year there were talks on inclusion of Btrfs system rollback support in Fedora 13. The feature will allow automatic and manual disk partition backups. Compared to other Linux file-systems Btrfs is flexible, and allows support for snapshots. It automatically creates a file-system snapshot before each yum transaction. In case the RPM packages are touched causing havoc on the system or any other problem, user can simply reboot and choose an earlier Btrfs snapshot to boot. The only concern could be that Btrfs file-system is not yet stable. Currently, it is available as an install time option for Fedora Linux. The feature has been updated and is now 80% complete.

Anaconda Storage Filtering

Anaconda's storage configuration was rewritten from scratch in F11 to address several design limitations and replace outdated chunks of code. Still there are number of outstanding problem areas that remain. This page tracks the progress. The device also documents the storage device filtering design and test requirements.

ColorManagement

Fedora like other Linux distros in general doesn't offer quality color management in key applications by default. Windows and OS X have integrated color management features in their working patterns that offer great effect. It provides an easy way to manage and assign profiles in Fedora for creative people to see the same color they just scanned. In Fedora 13 users would see the same color when the document is printed.

Gnome 2.30

Fedora 13 would include GENOME 2.30. This will ensure that Fedora ships with the current version of Genome desktop. It would stay in sync with upstream.

KDE 4.4

Fedora 13 would rebase KDE to 4.4 version. It would include new features such as PolicyKit 1 KAuth backend and improved PulseAudio integration. IN addition it would have better PulseAudio integration in Phonon and KMix and knetworkmanager. KDE remains a popular desktop environment for Fedora users as its feature rich and stable.
Easier Python Debugging

The gbd debugger had been extended to provide detailed report on the internals of the Python 2 and Python 3 runtimes. The Backtraces that involve Python can be seen bydefault revealing mixed C and Python-level information on what such processes are doing. This ability is unique to Fedora and valuable for Python developers would seek additional visibility into their CPython processes. This would be of great help for developers making it much easier to read backtraces when a library wrapped by python encounters a bug.
KDE PolicyKit One Qt

Fedora 13 will have PolicyKit One support to Qt/KDE applications and the KDE desktop. Currently Fedora uses Policy Kit One as default authentication mechanism, but KDE supports only old Policy Kit, which is already deprecated in Fedora. With Policy Kit One support Fedora KDE users/developers will be able to use its own Qt/KDE applications with nicer Qt API. The Authentication Agent dialog would match rest of desktop environment (Gnome one would be replaced). The KDE upstream would mean better adoption of Fedora in-house project.

KDE PulseAudio Integration

The popular KDE desktop will now integrate better with the default sound solution in Fedora, it will now allow the full capabilities.

There is new PulseAudio integration features available in Fedora 13

Phonon detects PulseAudio and no longer shows non-PulseAudio devices when PulseAudio is running.
PulseAudio includes a new module-device-manager which allows Phonon to manage PulseAudio devices.
Using the above, Phonon allows setting device priorities for the devices reachable through PulseAudio.
KMix now shows PulseAudio volumes, including per-application volumes, and allows moving applications between devices.
The traditional ALSA backend for KMix is still available, use export KMIX_PULSEAUDIO_DISABLE=1 to force its use even if PulseAudio is detected.

Those users who don't use PulseAudio are not affected by any of these changes.
KVM Stable PCI Address

The allow devices in KVM guest virtual machines to retain the same PCI address allocations as other devices are added or removed from the guest configuration. It allows the devices to be added or removed from the guest configuration. The feature would remove a significant issue with Fedora's virtualizationsupport for Windows.
NetBeans_6.8

Fedora 13 will rebase to NetBeans 6.8. NetBeans IDE 6.8 is the first IDE to offer complete support for the entire Java EE 6 spec and improved support for JSF 2.0/Facelets, Java Persistence 2.0, EJB 3.1 including using EJBs in web applications, RESTful web services, and GlassFish v3. It can be used to develop the latest JavaFX SDK 1.2.1, and for creating PHP web applications with the new PHP 5.3 release or with the Symfony Framework.
NetworkManager Mobile Status
ModemManager already has D-Bus methods to get the required information from various cards, but user needs to add some nm-applet icons for better cellular signal strength. They must compel nm-applet/NM listen for signal strength changes, or poll modem-manager for such changes while connected. With the feature it would be easier to use mobile broadband. Users would know know when their device has a signal and if they are roaming or not.

It's a boot method that uses very small images (iso, floppy, disk) to bootstrap a machine, which then contacts a remote server for boot information. In the long run this method might completely replace DVD downloads. The Fedora specific technology would provide additional boot options. The technology, gpxe that makes it possible can be burned to nic ROMs or BIOS.
Boost 1.41 Uplift

The new feature brings 1.41.0 of Boost to Fedora 13 along with BoostMPI. Boost would be built with CMake. The upgrade would allow bi-annual opportunistic syncing with upstream sources. The Boost development community is exploring alternate build and source code control approaches. Itincludes the use of more standard build and release management tools such as git and CMake.

The new way to build Boost allows two enhancements when compared to the current build system

Create some more libraries such as Boost MPI
Stay synchronized with the latest Boost versions more easily

Sync with upstream would keep Fedora updated.
Zarafa

Zarafa Outlook Sharing is a fully featured and stable groupware solution including a Outlook-like web interface. It would serve as a Microsoft Exchange replacement for Fedora. It's an Open Source Collaboration that integrates existing Linux mail server, native mobile phone support by ActiveSync compatiblity. It offers webaccess with through an Ajax interface with a look and feel like Outlook. In addition, itincludes IMAP4 and a POP3 gateway as well as an iCal/CalDAV gateway. Zarafa groupware solution would be using MAPI objects, and provide a MAPI client library as well as programming interfaces for C++, PHP and Perl. It is the first of its kind groupware and/or collaboration in the entire Fedora Collection.
Highlighted Updated Features

NFSv4 Default

This is again an update that changes the default NFS protocol to version 4. This would definitely improve the performance. In the version 4, server has state, which implies It can communicate with each NFS client. The server can issue things called delegations for files allow the v4 client to aggressively cache. It drastically cuts down on network traffic between client and server.
NFS Client IPv6

This updated feature would support mounting NFS servers over IPv6. There are many installations that already use IPV6. The new feature would provide the ability to mount via NFS over these networks. Solaris supports IPv6 for years. Linux might also support it.
Nouveau DisplayPort

Fedora 13 would offer enhanced support for DisplayPort in X and kernel drivers for NVIDIA hardware. DisplayPort offers a higher link bandwidth than dual-link DVI. Monitors can easily take advantage of this by providing higher resolutions, higher color depths, and higher refresh rates. The DisplayPort will also run at a lower voltage than DVI and LVDS, and uses lesser power. The future laptops will likely switch to embedded DisplayPort for the local panel for this reason. With this feature, Fedora users can take advantage of the the technical superiority of DisplayPort.
Yum Langpack Plugin

This yum plugin allows langpacks to be automatically installed for your native language when base packages with langpacks get installed. The plugin is expected to do the following

when user activates yum (eg through PackageKit) the plugin will check if langpacks are needed or available for the packages involved in the transaction
keep conditional lang support entries in comps for now and maybe drop them in a later release
package languages can be configured in .conf file

The users will get langpacks for their language installed automatically

I was playing around with the twitter API and I found a way to find the exact number of Twitter users.

Note: The number of twitter users is continuously increasing by dozens every second, however it will still be accurate at the time of this writing for the higher order digits.

The number of twitter users is 79.7 million at this time.

Note: This doesn't exclude the users who have been banned by the system or who opted to delete their account.

I haven't detailed the exact method for determining them as Twitter spammers may misuse the tecnique, though I suspect many of them already are.

The last twitter user at the time of this writing (will be obsolete even before the post is published) is Nancy MacKenzie ( @NancyMacKenzfn ).

The key question however is how many of these are active users.

Windows 7 is Strong, Choose The Free Upgrade

Next week, Microsoft is releasing Windows 7, a slick, much improved operating system that should go a long way toward erasing the bad impression left by its previous effort, Vista.

If you've been holding off on buying a new computer, Windows 7 will be a good excuse to get back into the game. And if you've been weighing a Mac versus a Windows PC, then you should know that "7" makes Windows more attractive, though not a clear-cut choice for everyone. Windows is now easier to use and better looking than it was before, while maintaining its core advantage of cheaper, more diverse hardware.

However, most PC users should not take the release of Windows 7 as a call to action, or feel that they have to run out and buy the software for use on a computer they're planning on keeping. The upgrade will most likely not be worth the time or money, much less the effort of hosting a Windows 7 "launch party" as Microsoft suggests.

Windows 7 will come in several versions. The one aimed at U.S. consumers is Home Premium, which will cost $120 if bought as an upgrade to XP or Vista. You can buy it as a download or on a disc. Beginning on Oct. 22, it will come installed on new PCs.

Here are some of its highlights:

— The taskbar — the strip of icons usually found at the bottom of the screen — now does more than show which programs are running. You can also stick icons for your favorite programs on it, to launch them quickly. It's fast and convenient, combining the best features of the old Windows taskbar and Apple's Dock.

— File folders can now be organized into "libraries." You can have a photo library, for instance, that gives you quick access to pictures in folders spread out over your hard drive, or even several hard drives. This is great because many applications don't automatically put files into Microsoft's My Documents and My Photos folders, and tend to deposit content in their own folders. The new arrangement also makes for easy backups.

— Like Vista, Windows 7 will ask you twice if you really want to make changes to your settings or install programs, for the sake of security. But Windows 7 does it less often, and the prompts can be turned off.

— Windows 7 can sense if you use more than one finger on your touch pad or touch screen, allowing for neat tricks such as spreading your fingers to zoom into a picture, just like on the iPhone. This is isn't revolutionary per se — computer manufacturers have bolted multitouch sensing on previous versions of Windows. But it does make it easier for them to include advanced touch capabilities, and many of them are planning to do so. That is what could really revolutionize how we use computers. I've tried laptops and desktops with touch screens, and found it nice to be able to directly tap links and buttons, bypassing the touch pad and mouse.

— For a lot of users, the step up to Windows 7 will also mark a transition to a 64-bit operating system. That means computers will now be able to use a lot more Random Access Memory, or RAM, for better performance in demanding applications such as video editing. Vista and XP came in 64-bit versions in addition to the regular 32-bit versions, but the XP version was never popular, and the Vista version became mainstream only last year. But 64 bits will be standard on Windows 7, installed on nearly all new computers.

Windows XP users have a lot more to gain by going to Windows 7. Vista introduced some great features, such as fast searches of the entire hard drive, that of course are present in 7 as well. Unfortunately, upgrading an existing PC from XP to 7 is not easy.

After upgrading, users will have to reinstall all their programs and find their files in the folder where Windows 7 tucks them away.

They may also have hardware problems. I found an old HP laser printer no longer worked with Windows 7. This isn't really Microsoft's fault or, specifically, a problem with the new operating system — HP just doesn't provide a 64-bit driver for that printer. A driver is a program that tells a piece of hardware how to work with an operating system.

If you do upgrade, I would still recommend tackling that transition head-on by installing the 64-bit version of Windows 7, which doesn't cost more. Microsoft recommends a minimum of 2 gigabytes of RAM to run it.

If your computer runs Windows Vista, I think it's hard to justify spending $120 for an upgrade. The new features are nice but hardly must-haves. For daily e-mail and Web surfing, they won't make much of a difference. Vista was much maligned when it arrived in early 2007 for being slow, buggy and annoying. Now, it really isn't that bad, because updates have fixed a lot of the problems.

However, if you bought a Vista-based computer after June 25, you should be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7 from the manufacturer, and I suggest taking advantage of it. Your computer likely already is running 64-bit software, so there should be no problems with drivers, and the upgrade is much easier than one from XP. Windows 7 can keep your installed programs and your files in their old folders.

In weeks of testing the final version of Windows 7 on five computers, I encountered only one serious glitch. The backup function simply didn't work on one computer. The error message was obscure as always, and troubleshooting on Microsoft's Web site provided no solution. I ended up using third-party backup software. Given that regular backups are essential for a home computer, one can only hope that this will be an unusual problem that gets fixed promptly.

Another disappointment is that Windows 7 doesn't seem to improve boot-up times. In my tests, it took slightly longer to get going on Windows 7 than with XP or Vista on the same computer. I don't think this should be a major issue, though — instead of shutting your computer down, use "sleep mode" instead. This function has improved a lot since XP, and most computers take about 10 seconds to wake up.

Perhaps the most exciting thing about Windows 7 is that it's inspiring computer manufacturers to try new things, and reviving old ideas like touch-enabled "tablet" PCs. It's breathing new life into the computer market. It just won't do much for old clunkers.

The release of Firefox 3.5 download came as the open source browser is proving an increasingly formidable challenger to Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8, which once had over 90 percent market share. In June Firefox has a 22.5 percent market share according to web metrics company Net Applications, behind Internet Explorer's 65.5 percent. Though Internet Explorer's share has been declining for some time, the slide has accelerated over the last year since Firefox released version 3.0.

Mozilla, the organization that distributes the open source browser, said the new version is twice as fast as the previous version, and also includes a "private browsing" feature, also called "porn mode," that allows users to hide their tracks when the option is turned on.

Other privacy options allow users to easily and selectively wipe their web history.

Mozilla claimed a world record for software downloads when the previous version was released a year ago. The organization said that even more users were downloading the new browser.

Not really, but you can have that dock in your Windows GUI. Drag and drop your favorite applications to the dock and you are all set.

You can layout your dock in any side; top,left,right,bottom of your screen.

Rocketdock in action

This nifty program is far more efficient than any other paid programs of the same genre which tried to mimic the Mac's GUI. To be true, it increased my efficiency while working.

Forget about lame Quick Launch, or any other Windows Shortcut tricks you've been using. This little software will do the magic.

Astonishingly, this is FREEWARE.

Gmail adds "Undo" Option for any mail sent

I don't make much mistakes but I've seen people cussing themselves like 'darn it', 'Oh shit!!!', 'What the f** did I do", .. these are some of the common phrases that you must have heard once in a while when they make mistakes. When it comes to sending emails, I thoroughly check twice before hitting 'SEND' buttons. Lots of people don't do. For them, here's the life saver feature that Google has recently added to it's Gmail. It's 'Undo' feature.

It's not activated by default. First, activate it.
- Check out the top most area in Gmail after logged in, click 'Settings', click 'Labs' and enable the 'Undo' feature. (click the image below to see how it looks)

Once activated, sign out, sign in. Voila, the 'Undo' option will be right there as soon as we send emails.

I tried to send dummy email..welllll.. to myself.

As soon as I clicked 'SEND' button, I saw 'Undo' link. Cheers!!!!! I clicked the 'Undo'.
And, my sending has been undone.It then took me to a 'compose mail' screen from where I disposed the mail simply clicking the 'discard' button.

Took a deep breathe, sipped in luke-warm red clover tea and felt glad to have this feature On.

So many people still spend hundreds of words in emails trying to find meaning of the chat/online/net etiquettes that we netizens use often. Some similar incident happened to me lately. Someone in this universe of internet, whom I met online, came to me first asking about the words that I posted online, of course somewhere online. What the relationship between Michael Jackson and technology? Yes.. it's about there is Jackson virus and Spam that spread the cyber world. Security researchers warned Thursday of the increasing levels of viruses and spam using Jackson’s name to snare unsuspecting users.
One e-mail carries the subject line “Remembering Michael Jackson” was circulating with a worm in tow. The e-mail has a zip file attached that infects victims if downloaded.

“The e-mail, which claims to come from sarah@michaeljackson.com, says that the attached ZIP file contains secret songs and photos of Michael Jackson,” Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, wrote on a blog. “However, the reality is that opening the attachment exposes you to infection - and if your computer is hit you

will be spreading the worm onto other Internet users.”

Cluley said that the malware also spreads via USB memory sticks. Another e-mail promises an exclusive look at a YouTube video of the “last work of Michael Jackson,” but instead installs a malicious program that steals passwords.

The Microsoft Official Antivirus 'Morro' Will be Released

Microsoft's Windows is the most loved OSvirus affected OS in the world. World's largest software producer is all set to rage a war against viruses with the introduction of its long-awaited free anti-virus service. On the market-front the product could be a direct offensive against the anti-virus giants Symantec Corp and McAfee Inc. Microsoft begins charity at home offering the early version of the product to its employees for testing. Microsoft would soon launch a trial or beta version of the anti-virus on its website. However, no specific date has been announced yet.

The announced saw Symantec and McAfee shares plunging by 0.5 percent and 1.3 percent on receptively, while Microsoft gained a 2.1 percent.

Investors were closely monitoring the free service and have code named it Morro after Brazil's Morro de Sao Paolo beach. It could hurl the sales of products from Symantec and McAfee, which generates a billions of dollars of revenue every year protecting Windows PCs from attacks by hackers.

According to Daniel Ives, an analyst with FBR Capital Markets, its a long-term competitive threat.

Microsoft has announced that Morro would be equipped with basic features to fight wide range of viruses. This would make it comparable to the lower end consumers products from Symantec and McAfee that are priced at $40 per year. The top sellers of these companies are security suites that include the features of encryption, firewalls, password protection, parental controls and data backup.

Microsoft had made its foray into the anti-virus market with Live OneCare that turned out to be a commercial flop. The free product Morro is basically a stripped down version of the OneCare. The company plans to stop the production of OneCare in November and said it might launch the product by the end of 2009.

Until Morro's beta is released, we can keep our fingers crossed for the products capability to take on its competitors.

Windows 7 Without Internet Explorer In Europe

Microsoft is to strip its Internet Explorer browser from the new version of its Windows 7 operating system that it sells in Europe, the company announced Thursday. Microsoft said the move was designed to meet criticism from European Union (EU) regulators who have launched an investigation into whether bundling the browser with the operating system is in breach of European anti-trust rules. "Given the pending legal proceeding, we've decided that instead of including Internet Explorer in Windows 7 in Europe, we will offer it separately and on an easy-to-install basis to both computer manufacturers and users," Microsoft said in a statement.

"This means that computer manufacturers and users will be free to install Internet Explorer on Windows 7, or not, as they prefer."

Windows 7 is scheduled to be generally available Oct 22. Ironically, Microsoft is making the changes as rival firms like Firefox, Apple Safari and Google Chrome chip away at Internet Explorer's once unassailable position.

If you had some site, or browsed the Web a lot, in the late 90s, you probably remember services called “link exchangers” (the best known of which was, indeed, called “LinkExchange”). Basically, you subscribed, then created a banner for your site, and they gave you some code to put in your front page so that it would show banners for other subscribers. Usually, for every 2 you showed, yours would be shown once on some other subscrieber’s site. It worked reasonably well, though for some reason you don’t see it any more these days.

To make sure that you are, indeed, at least looking at the blogs, you have to stay at least 30 seconds in each blog, or it doesn’t earn you credits; also, to go to the next one, there’s a “captcha”, a varying place you have to click, to prevent people from using a “robot” program to do it automatically.

I’ve been trying out 5 of these services, and they have worked reasonably well, I have been getting dozens of accesses, daily, from each. They are:

I’ve been using them for less than a week, so it’s still too early to say if one is significantly better (or worse) than the others. I find that Firefox, with its tabs support, is perfect for using the five of them at the same time. :)

A great side effect is that, by browsing other blogs to earn credits, I’ve discovered some very interesting ones - not often, but once in a while. They’ve even given me ideas for articles of my own (mostly for my other blogs, not this one). :)

One drawback, though - from looking at my logs, a lot of people are, indeed, just browsing for credits - they just see the front page, but don’t read any of the full articles. Some are sure to do it because they like other kinds of blogs (for instance, I find that many people in BlogExplosion have religious or conservative blogs, so that’s probably what they’re interested in, and they won’t find that in any of mine), but a great many are probably merely collecting credits. I guess it’s inevitable that some people do that. Still, some real readers have arrived from these services, and that’s always a good thing.

There are a lot of RSS feed directories, lists, news aggregators and so on, and letting them know about your new feed can only help.

This part is, unfortunately, a bit long and boring, because, so far (this may, and hopefully will, change in the future) there’s no way to do it automatically. You have to go to each directory and add your feed manually.

I could list some directories here, but I don’t believe in reinventing the wheel, so I’ll just link to a very useful list: RSSTop55 - Best Blog Directory And RSS Submission Sites.

As I said, it’ll take some time, and be somewhat boring, but it’s a good idea. And you only have to do it once (for each blog, that is).

Note: if they ask you for an email address, be sure to use a working one, as you have to confirm some submissions by clicking on a link you’ll receive by email.

How do people blog?

In the most basic sense, there are two kinds of blogs: personal ones (also known as “everything but the kitchen sink” blogs), and topical ones.

Most people start with a personal blog, although they may not see it as such. They call it original :) names like “random thoughts”, and talk about what whatever they feel like. Nothing wrong with that… but those blogs tend to have one post a week, and after a year or two, the blogger gets tired and shuts it down, or it begins to have 6-month intervals between posts.

The other possibility is when you really have something to say, or have a subject you want to write about. A lot. Computer games, politics, cheese dip… You choose. Sometimes, a blog has more than one topic: for instance, there may be a blog about computer games and comic books, or about movies and music. The possibilities are limitless, which is a phrase that always sounds deep. :)

But, sometimes, people change. Maybe you find that you are, half the time, writing about a different subject than whatever your blog was initially about. Or you don’t do that, because you feel guilty about changing your blog’s theme. Maybe there’s a bunch of posts you have in mind, but they don’t really fit with the theme of your blog. Or maybe your blog has a too “generic” theme, such as “philosophy” (oops…), or “technology” (double oops…).

In situations like those, maybe it’s time to start a new blog. Independent of the first, although they’ll link to each other, of course.

Why do so? Well, first, it’ll give you a new sense of freedom. Finally, you can write your 30-article series about cheese dip without feeling guilty about posting it in your sheep shearing blog.

Second, multi-subject blogs tend to have just your friends as regular readers - unless you’re a celebrity. Every visitor that arrives there because of a subject is unlikely to care about the other subject(s). And nobody reads a blog where they have to skip 2/3 of the articles.

Third, more focused blogs tend to have the best focused ads. A blog about computers has more generic ads than a blog about software, which is worse than one about games, which is worse than one about strategy games… you get the idea. Of course, if you write about using that particular tactic in that particular scenario in that particular strategy game, it may end up being too focused, and have a very small number of readers.

When not to start a new blog? If you are already spread too thin, if you don’t have the time for your current blogs. (be sure that it’s really a question of time, not of boredom!)

This option sets if to reflow pages at an interval any higher than that specified by content.notify.interval. Right-click anywhere in the about:config window and select New and then Boolean from the pop-up menu.

Type content.notify.ontimer in New boolean value pop-up window and click OK

8. Notify Backoffcount

With this option you can controls the maximum number of times content will do timer-based reflows. After this number is reached the page will reflow once the downloading is finished. Now follow the steps

Step 3: Now you will be prompted to enter value. Enter 5 and hit OK

9. Minimize unwanted CPU cycles and Bandwidth Usage

By default Firefox downloads the pages from the links that you are not visiting frequently. This is called link prefetching. The webpage hints the browser that certain pages are likely to be visited. The browser downloads them immediately to be viewed when requested by the user. If you don't actually click the link it means you used up bandwidth and CPU cycles to store history for web page you might not view ever.

Type the following at the Filter text box on top of the page:

10. Reduce the Wait Time

With this hack you could reduce some milliseconds that you wait before the page is displayed. This can be avoided by creating a new config option. To do this follow the steps

Step 3: Next screen set its values to 0.

Is Your Small Businesses Targeted by Hackers?

The Small Business Technology Institute and Symantec joined forces in 2005 to study the network security of 1,000 small businesses. The results are pretty bad.

Good news, bad news - ready? Here we go:

Good news: According to the study, about 70% of small businesses feel that securing their data is a high priority and a little over 80% are confident in the current measures they take to provide security. Awesome!

Bad news: 56% of these small businesses had at least one security incident in the past year. Even more disturbing, many still had not taken steps to protect themselves and their data from future attacks 8o. About 20% didn’t even scan incoming email for viruses. More than 60% had not secured their wireless network with even the most basic encryption. Not good.

These small businesses could be the corner hardware store where you buy a ladder, the little gift shop you visit while on vacation or the mechanic who fixes your car. These are the types of businesses interviewed in this study. After you give them your credit card, do you know where that number goes? Is this small business’ network secure? Do they have a firewall in place with up-to-date anti-virus?

Let’s say their network was hacked and you suddenly became a victim of ID theft. Do you think that this small business has the resources to remedy that problem? Would they even know that they were hacked? Or would you be the first to find out after you saw odd charges on your credit card and started getting phone calls from bill collectors?

This report shows that many small businesses do not understand how much damage can be caused by information security incidents. It also shows that many aren’t educated about cyberthreats and have fail to adequately invest in security. This means they are the easy targets for hackers.

Larger companies have made big strides in security and that has made them harder targets for hackers. So, when one target proves too difficult, a hacker simply moves to an easier target.

Every business should have AT LEAST the most basic security in place: anti-virus software, a firewall, anti-spyware software, and anti-phishing software on all computer systems. Many of these measures are available for free and so there really is no excuse for not having them in place. Here are a few resources to check out:

While most ladies her age prefer to sit quietly, 103-year-old English lady Ivy Bean loves to Twitter, something that has made her the oldest user of the social networking site. Bean, a great grandmother, decided to join Twitter after she got bored of using Facebook, where she had made 4,800 friends. "I'm enjoying Twitter and having my photo taken - and I'm looking forward to Deal Or No Deal," the Sun quoted her as telling her web readers.

The ex-mill worker got a helping hand to smooth her switch to Twitter by calling in IT experts The Geek Squad.

"It's brilliant to help someone as inspirational as Ivy to get started and teach her about Twitter," boss Martin Dix said.

"She's already signed up to Facebook with 4,800 friends.

"She shows others that you shouldn't be frightened of technology," he stated.

Bean's enthusiasm is spreading among her friends at Hillside Manor care home in Bradford, West Yorks.

"All the residents are taking a leaf out of her book. Four signed up for computer college," manager Pat Wright said.

"Others have joined Facebook or surf the net and enjoy themselves with ten-pin bowling on the games console," he added.

There's a new site that can provide free sms for us. That's Jaxtr. Now with Jaxtr, you can send free SMS worldwide to 38 countries. You can send messages to anyone irrespective of whether he is a Jaxtr user or not. The message can be sent directly from the member’s Jaxtr page. You will have to register with Jaxtr. The basic membership is free and you can send SMS using that. So what else can you need.

There is one limitation. The maximum of the message can be only 65 characters. So your messages have to be to the point. But as you are paying not a single penny for the messages, you won’t mind this. The good thing is that, there are no ads displayed along with the messages. Top 10 Internet Connection Speed Countries

At the end of 2008, approximately 19 per cent Internet connections around the world were at speeds greater than 5 Mbps — a 21 per cent increase over the average global connection speed at the end of 2007.

This is according to the State of the Internet report, a quarterly study by Akamai Technologies, the US-based Internet content distribution giant. The State of the Internet report tracks average connection speeds for countries around the world.

Check out the top 10 nations in terms of average Internet connection speed.

1. South Korea

South Korea rules supreme when it comes to Internet connection speed and broadband connectivity. It is the world’s No.1 with average connection speed of 15 Mbps, ten times the global average!

During 2008, South Korea’s rate of quarterly change appeared to be locked into a cyclical pattern, with quarterly decreases being recorded in the first and third quarters, and increases seen in the second and fourth quarters.

For the whole year, South Korea saw a modest 7 per cent rise in their levels of high broadband adoption. South Korea is also ranked first in terms of high broadband connectivity with 69 per cent connections above 5 Mpbs.

2. Japan

Japan ranks 2nd in terms of Internet connection and high broadband connectivity. Japan ranks 2nd in terms of high broadband connectivity. About 54 per cent of the connections in Japan are above 7 Mbps.

3. Hong Kong

Hong Kong ranks third with an Internet connection speed of 6.9 Mbps. The country ranks fifth in terms of high broadband connectivity with 38 per cent of the connection above 5 Mbps.

4. Romania

Romania is at the fourth position with a Internet connection speed of 5.7 Mbps. The country ranks third in terms of high broadband connectivity with 45% of the connection above 5 Mbps.

5. Sweden

Sweden is at the fifth position with a Internet connection speed of 5.6 Mbps. Sweden ranks fourth in terms of high broadband connectivity with 39 per cent of the connection above 5Mbps.

6. Switzerland

Switzerland has bagged the sixth position with an Internet connection speed of over 5 Mbps. The country however does not figure in the top ten list of countries with high broadband connectivity.

7. Netherlands

Netherlands ranks 7th with an Internet connection speed of 4.9 Mbps. The country ranks 7th in terms of high broadband connectivity with 28 per cent of the connections above 5 Mbps.

8. Belgium

Belgium is at the 8th position with an Internet connection speed of 4.7 Mbps. The country ranks sixth in terms of high broadband connectivity with 31 per cent of the connection above 5 Mbps.

9. Slovakia

Slovakia bags the ninth position with an Internet connection speed of 4.5 Mbps. The country does not figure among the top ten in terms of high broadband connectivity.

10. Norway

Norway ranks tenth with an Internet connection speed of 4.5 Mbps. The country ranks fifth in terms of high broadband connectivity with 38 per cent of the connection above 5 Mbps.

United States is at the 17th position with an Internet connection speed of 3.9 Mbps, up approximately 8 per cent from the average connection speed for the first quarter of 2008.

In terms of Internet connection speed, China is way behind leading economies with an average Internet connection speed of 833 kbps.

India has been ranked at a dismal 115th among 223 countries in terms of average Internet connection speeds. India has an average Internet connection speed of just 772 Kbps compared with the global average of 1.5 Mbps.

While privacy is a thing of assurance for some, it is annoyance for most. So here is a trick that will help you to see any locked profile. This trick will let you see anyone’s tagged photos even if they are private for you.

Trick

Step1: Log into facebook and don't worry about making another account. They will not be able to trace you down and ban you.

Step2:

* Find the person's unique profile ID.
* Search for them and click view friends or send message.
* Write the unique ID from the address bar (only the numbers) or copy it somewhere else.

Step3: Now that you have your unique profile ID you can use the next two links to view a total of 40 tagged photos:

New Social Media from Microsoft : Vine

Microsoft has launched a new product named Vine into private beta .The service uses alerts, reports and a personal dashboard to allow users to stay in touch, particularly during crisis situations.

The dashboard which appears as a widget on a PC screen displays a map of the user’s community and the status of their contacts. It also has buttons to send alerts or reports, which can be sent and received on the PC or as text messages on a cellphone.

Two Great Browser to Try

Two new Web browsers have recently become available for exploring the Internet. Google Chrome and Flock take radically different approaches to the browsing experience and I recommend you take a look at them when you get a chance.

Google Chrome is a minimalist’s browser. It doesn’t offer a multitude of features, but it’s very fast and solid as a rock. It relies heavily on tabs when visiting different sites and each tab runs in its own process. This keeps the browser from crashing from a page error or some misbehaved plug-in, and prevents pages in the background from slowing down the foreground window. I like Chrome’s history function. When you open a new tab or window it displays thumbnails and links to your most recently vistited pages.

Chrome offers a single address bar for both URLs and keywords. Google is the default search engine, but it can be switched to others—Wikipedia, Aol, Yahoo, etc. The address bar has a fast auto-suggest function. For flying around the Web from site to site, Chrome is a jet fighter. However, if you mostly stay put on a collection of actively fed “home” pages, Flock may be the browser for you. It’s a mega-cruise ship.

Flock is Firefox on social media steroids. Flock takes a framed approach to visiting the Social Media Web, grabing feeds from places, such as: Facebook, Twitter and MySpace into sidebars and YouTube selections into a headband. Flock works best opened full-screen on a big, wide, LCD display. Beware! The shear number and variety of tool bars, control tabs, bookmarks, menus and search boxes can overwhelm.

Flock, by default, remembers the sites you had loaded when you last quit and reopens them. It also opens a generated page, “My World” that captures all your various feeds, messages and pings. I like the way Flock integrates with Gmail, and find it useful as an “active desktop” – a one-stop site that I scan every so often to keep in the mix as I’m doing other work. Flock pops-up a standard blog editor when I want to post something and just about anything can be shared with a drag-n-drop action.

The online support documentation provided by the these two new browsers also provide a facinating contrast. Google wrote a Chrome comic book that teaches you how to use Chrome with a technical depth that’s actually readable. Flock has uploaded a series of youTube videos showing Flock’s Features in action. Check it out, you’ll get a better idea of what Flock is like and I won’t have to insert a screenshot here.

Google Chome is only available now for Windows. When it becomes available for the Mac, I’ll probably be using both Flock and Chrome more often than Firefox and Safari.

Blackberry Storm VS I-Phone

When Apple released the iPhone to the market, it redefined the cell phone. Since then, other manufacturers have been scrambling to make a competing device that will operate on networks other than AT&T and not only do what the iPhone does well, but also address its shortcomings. In short, they have been trying to come up with an “iPhone Killer.” This is no easy task, to be sure. One just has to note that this is not the first time that Apple has set a high standard for an electronic device. Even now there is some debate over whether any company has come out with the definitive “iPod killer.”

Over the past months there has been a lot of anticipation aimed at Research in Motion (RIM) and their new BlackBerry model, the Storm, which many a BlackBerry user has been hoping will be their answer to the iPhone. Well, it finally hit the market today and on November 19, the site engadget published a very detailed review that should prove very helpful to anyone considering buying one of these devices. Unfortunately, it was not an unqualified endorsement. In summing up his review, Joshua Topolsky states,

"[the Storm is] not as easy, enjoyable, or consistent to use as the iPhone, and the one place where everyone is sure they have an upper hand — that wow-inducing clickable screen — just isn’t all that great. For casual users, the learning curve and complexity of this phone will feel like an instant turn off, and for power users, the lack of a decent typing option and considerable lagginess in software will give them pause. RIM tried to strike some middle ground between form and function, and unfortunately came up short on both.”

Another good and thorough review can be found at The Boy Genius Report. Unfortunately, the bottom line of that review is also not very complimentary:

“It’s not that the Storm is a piece of junk for the most part, it’s that it goes against everything a BlackBerry stands for… Quick. Easy. Effortless. The touch screen on the Storm complicates the simplest of tasks sometimes, you lose that lightning fast BlackBerry crack-addict mentality, at least to us.

The whole point of a BlackBerry and what BlackBerry users bragged about to their co-workers, friends and family to was that a BlackBerry was straight-forward and completely uncomplicated. The Storm complicates things. There’s not one thing you can do faster on a Storm than you can on a Bold. Typing is mediocre at best, and to tell you the truth, it really does get tiring at times. It’s not something we can bang out 250-word emails on like we can on every other QWERTY BlackBerry in the past. It hinders your mobile device experience, in our opinion, if you are a raging lunatic on your BlackBerry. It just doesn’t compare to the BlackBerry Bold. At least not in the current incarnation.”

Both reviews laud the solid construction of the device, and there are some positive notes about the browser upgrade, the faster 3G network and some other features, but the negatives noted were many, including:

* No WiFi (apparently at the specific request of Verizon)
* Difficulty with the touch screen for typing, as opposed to the hardware-based QWERTY keyboard.
* No inertia on the scrolling (the scroll stops dead with your finger).
* The UI is not custom built for touch navigation;
* Although the “clickable” SurePress screen is touted by RIM, it actually slows down typing.
* Transitions between apps is sluggish
* The library of available third party apps is weak, although RIM promises this to change, as they ramp up their own app store.
* Camera frustrating because it takes too long for it to focus and snap a picture.
* No solid GMail integration.

I am sure there will be a lot of disappointed people (especially BlackBerry fans) that have been waiting expectantly for this phone. Many of these issues may be resolved as RIM tweaks the OS and some of the physical characteristics of the phone, but it looks like the wait isn’t over for the iPhone killer.

What is Tsunami?. Historically, seismic ocean waves have been incorrectly called "tidal waves." Actually, these events are not at all related to tides.
